Our take from an Eastern & Western Perspective
Hormones are the text messages of the body. They direct our body systems and keep communication open between our cells.
In Western medicine, we think about the balance between estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, insulin, and thyroid hormones. In Chinese medicine, we think about qi, blood, yin and yang.

Acupuncture is a great place to start to balance our bodies, regulate periods and improve fertility. It can help lessen the dramatic swings in perimenopause. It can help make an easier transition into menopause and lessen side effects of lower levels of estrogen as we age.
Functional medicine can provide valuable insight into these hormonal shifts. Dr. Katie's favorite is the DUTCH test, which looks at female hormones, and can track them throughout the menstrual cycle, or even see how our genetics play into metabolism.

Using food as medicine can also play a role in hormone health. Brazil nuts and seaweed can support thyroid health. We may suggest beets to support blood or soups and teas for progesterone. We can also use Chinese herbal medicine and Western supplements in combination.

Utilizing red light can support thyroid health, endometriosis, fertility issues and skin changes. We generally don't recommend cold plunges as this can further disrupt hormone dysfunction in women, but infrared sauna can be beneficial. PEMF can support stress reduction and sleep.
We offer a hormone specific functional medicine visit for those just interested in the DUTCH test. We can help decide which test is right for you.

There is no one size fits all medicine when it comes to hormone health. We don't all need "estrogen detox" or to be chugging turmeric. We look at your individual needs and come up with a treatment plan specific to you.
